Assessment of Medial and Inferior Extraocular Muscle Thickness by Ultrasonography in Juvenile Patients with Graves’ Disease

چکیده
In juvenile patients with Graves’ disease, extraocular muscles may be involved. Ultrasonography is a very important and informative diagnostic method in patients with exophthalmos and Graves’ disease. The aim of our study was to evaluate medial and inferior extraocular muscle thickness in juvenile patients with Graves’ disease. Materials and methods: Ultrasonography was performed on 78 orbits of 39 juvenile patients with Graves’ disease. The thickness of medial and inferior extraocular muscle was measured. 60 orbits of 30 randomly selected normal healthy volunteers aged 7 to 33 years were evaluated in the study. The mean values of proptosis, extraocular muscle thickness were compared between the patients and the normal subjects (Student’s t-test). The significant level p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study revealed that the thickness values of extraocular medial and inferior rectus muscles in juvenile patients with Graves’ disease were significantly higher than in normal healthy subjects. Conclusions: The results of ultrasound investigation showed significant enlargement of medial and inferior extraocular muscle thickness in juvenile patients with Graves’ disease. The data showed that ultrasonography is important in the evaluation of the thickness of medial and inferior extraocular muscle in Graves’ disease.

Ultrasonography compared to magnetic resonance imaging in thyroid-associated Graves' ophthalmopathy.
OBJECTIVE To compare ultrasonography (US) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the clinical activity score (CAS) in Graves' ophthalmopathy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Nineteen patients underwent extraocular muscle thickness measurements by US and MRI, reflectivity by US and signal-intensity ratio by MRI. There were also twelve US control subjects. RESULTS US median thicknesses were greater tha...

A 44 year old diabetic woman presented with diplopia and bilateral ptosis and mild exophthalmos. The patient was clinically euthyroid, the baseline thyroid function tests were normal, but the thyroid stimulating hormone response to thyrotrophin releasing hormone was flat. Computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits showed left medial and inferior rectus muscle thicken...
متن کاملExtraocular muscle repositioning as the last therapeutic option for a patient with a severe course of Graves' Ophthalmopathy: a case report.
BACKGROUND Graves' disease is a common autoimmune inflammatory condition of the thyroid. About one in four of affected patients also develop orbital symptoms like exophthalmos, proptosis and diplopia - called Graves' Ophthalmopathy. Not all patients respond well to the standard therapy of systemic glucocorticoid administration. The inflammatory swelling of the intraorbital muscles can lead to p...
متن کاملHigh frequency skin ultrasonography in systemic sclerosis
Background: Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder which is characterised by cutaneous and internal organ fibrosis. Raynaud’s phenomenon is the earliest feature and may precede the onset of the disease by months to years. The heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and other organs may be involved. Our aim was to evaluate skin thickness and echogenicity in systemic...

Oculomotor disturbances commonly occur as manifestations of Graves’ Oohthalmomthv. We investieated the outcome of this disorderfollowing e&ernal-beam orbital radiotherapy. We conducted a prospective study on 15 patients to assess the extent of ophthalmopathy by clinical evaluation, and measurement of the amplitude of gaze and the thickness of the extraocular muscles on computed axial tomography...
